Problems Papuan people need to deal with

The people who live in the interior of West Papua struggle with specific problems. There aren't many jobs, there are no large factories nor large scale projects that need employees.

The earnings from selling farm products on local markets are often small and the market is also (too) far away from their village. Schools and hospitals are also too far away and too expensive. Papuans are forced to develop an opportunistic survival strategy.

Nature

Yields from the rich natural sources like oil, gas, wood, fish and ores hardly benefit the Papuan people. Earnings from mining and forestry benefit mainly large external and foreign companies.

Eventhough most Papuans are aware of the importance of nature conservation, they sometimes just don't have other options to make moeny as the chances for a reasonable income are scarce. Everybody has to eat. Social problems are due to the growing over-exploitation and degredation of the forests.

Health care

The health care situation in West Papua is really bad: facilities are concentrated in the cities and hardly available for the Papuan people who live in the interior. The child death rate is according to the WHO 18%. In the interior this rate is much higher and lies between 30 to 40 percent. Early child death is mainly caused by tropical diseases and contaminated drinking water.

Education

Education in the interior is not or hardly organized. Schools are empty because of the shortage of teachers. Middle and High schools only exist in the big cities. Therefor youngsters have very low chances of professional education.

Financial and humanitary help

The few financial and humanitary help that is given by organizations mainly ends up in the larger cities and not in the interior where most Papuan people live. This increases the tensions in this region, which are also caused by an uneven composition of the population and the transmigration policy.

Reports from Amnesty International and other surveys also show systematic violation of human rights and doubtful legal procedures in West Papua.

What does the SDSP do about this?
So the Papuan people need help. Former studies have shown that this area and in particular the interior is excluded from most aid programs. Even the Indonesian government hardly supports the Papuan people. Papuans are aware of their situation and need some support for their own initiatives to build a sustainable society. The SDSP gives them this support through projects which are initiated by the Papuan people.
