West Papua, formerly Irian Jaya
Papua Barat is the official name for the Indonesian province formerly known as Irian Jaya. The English name is West Papua. Papua Barat is the western half of the island of New Guinea.
Papua Barat is one of the world's last country parts where untouched nature still exists. The densed rainforests and mountains in the interior are mostly inaccessible and the wild rivers unnavigable. Mangrove forests and swamps cover the coast line. These factors caused a broad variety in culture, language and customs. In the interior tribes of whom little is known still live in a very primitive way of life. |
